The Alimandi Vaticano, Rome

9

The Alimandi Vaticano occupies a historical building and overlooks the sacred walls of the Vatican City. This warm and welcoming family-run hotel gives you immediate access to some of the most extraordinary religious and artistic iconography you're ever likely to see.

Situated within the city walls of the smallest internationally recognised independent state in the world, the Alimandi Vaticano offers luxury rooms and exceptional facilities with a friendly, personal touch.

The location
The hotel is located in an elegant and exclusive area directly opposite the Vatican Museums, so it is ideally situated for the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms, the Picture Gallery and the Vatican Gardens. Its unique position is highly convenient, enabling you to make the very most of your stay without lengthy excursions on foot; indeed, it is possible to walk to the Vatican in less than five minutes. San Peitro train station is only a 10-minute walk away, and both of Rome's main airports can be reached in 40 minutes by car.

The highlight
One of this lovely hotel's most appealing features is its situation: just a short walk, and you will find yourself revelling in the sublime grandeur of St Peter's Basilica and St Peter's Square. The Alimandi Vaticano is extremely close to Piazza Risorgimento, one of Rome's most famous shopping areas, and located in the Prati district on the north side of the Vatican City, an area full of cafes and restaurants serving exquisite local recipes. You're also only a few minutes' walk from the Cipro Metro station, so you can easily access other areas of cultural and historical significance.

The style
The overriding impression one gets at the four-star Alimandi Vaticano is of tasteful elegance coupled with an inviting atmosphere. Even allowing for its prestigious address, the exclusivity of this hotel is made all the more enticing because of its warm and comfortable ambience, which harmonises stylishly with the noble stateliness of the Eternal City.

In the 1920s, the hotel building was the Vatican district's local police station, and this fascinating historical detail can still be glimpsed in the building's facade and in the Liberty staircase with its distinctive stained-glass windows. In 2003, the building was bought by the Alimandi family, who have been in the hotel trade for three generations. The hotel was lovingly refurbished to bring it up to date, while carefully retaining some of those intriguing early design elements. One such clue to the building's origins can be spotted in a 5km section of communication cable, which linked the police station to the Ministry of the Interior and can still be seen on the hotel terrace.

The hotel's sumptuous rooms and Art Nouveau-styled suites are spacious and full of light with soft hues of peach and champagne and a high degree of classical old-world chic. The luxe pastel tones are complemented with exquisite drapes, bedding and carpeting. This smooth and timeless elegance comes with an array of modern comforts such as an ADSL internet connection, flat-screen television, a mini-bar and courtesy kit, personal climate control and sound-proofed windows. All the standard, superior double and quadruple rooms, triple and deluxe rooms effortlessly blend this warm, tasteful decor with state-of-the-art facilities to satisfy the needs of both the demanding business traveller and the relaxed family group. Most rooms overlook the Vatican Museums or the city's historical walls.
